TMJ Disorders
Most people are attuned to visiting a dentist when they have toothaches or gum pain. However, some may feel it is a bit of a leap to visit a dentist for symptoms extending outside the mouth area.
In truth, the muscles, tendons and bones of the temporomandibular joint, commonly referred to as TMD or TMJ, can cause complex problems in the mouth, face, neck and shoulders that can develop more serious over time. Neuromuscular dentists, Dr. Haas and Dr. Schacht work to treat the underlying cause and associated symptoms of TMD at Haas Dental Centre in Toronto.
Temporomandibular joints are located on each side of a person's face, just in front of the ear where the upper and lower jaws meet. You use these TMJ joints every day for chewing, speaking and yawning, as they allow the jaws to move up, down, forward, backward and side-to-side. When these jaw joints become damaged or unbalanced, the effect can be devastating to a person.
Dr. Haas and Dr. Schacht evaluates the jaw alignment or misalignment during a dental assessment. This dental assessment utilizes computerized jaw motion tracking. By identifying certain problems, Dr. Haas and Dr. Schacht can help alleviate the often painful symptoms of a misaligned jaw.
Symptoms of a TMJ disorder or TMD can include:
- Pain in the face, jaw, back, neck or shoulder

- Ringing in the ears
- Jaw popping or clicking
- Stiffness in the jaw muscles
